Starslip Crisis was my first venture into the realm of non film Sci Fi, as well as my first real experience with Kris Straub s writing.I had learned about Kris through Penny Arcade and his and his friend Scott s Blamimations I very much enjoyed his sense of humour so I began doing some digging on the things he d written The first I stumbled upon was Starslip, so I decided to give it a try.The comic started as a sort of affectionate parody of sci fi culture, based partly on Star Trek and paro Starslip Crisis was my first venture into the realm of non film Sci Fi, as well as my first real experience with Kris Straub s writing.I had learned about Kris through Penny Arcade and his and his friend Scott s Blamimations I very much enjoyed his sense of humour so I began doing some digging on the things he d written The first I stumbled upon was Starslip, so I decided to give it a try.The comic started as a sort of affectionate parody of sci fi culture, based partly on Star Trek and parodying the situations and characters of other well known science fiction media, including a character named Zillion, based on Nathan Fillion s character on Joss Whedon s Firefly. However, over time, Starslip found its own identity The characters were fleshed out as well as the universe it s set in, creating some very unique and interesting situations and conversations. The strip centers around the captain curator of the luxury starship turned space museum Fuseli, Memnon Vanderbeam and company Memnon is a well refined man of excellent taste who takes his job incredibly seriously, art being his entire life.Piloting the ship is Cutter Edgewise, a partially rehabilitated space pirate with a penchant for drinking and sarcasm Cutter is a bit gruff in the beginning but is also an excellent pilot with a fierce sense of loyalty to his crew.Mr Jinx is the Cirbozoid servant He resembles a large praying mantis and has an incredibly complex and impossible to understand biology, known to excrete fluids and gases in certain situations Mr Jinx serves Mr Vanderbeam without question, often acting as the punching bag.Crewman Meridian Holiday is the ship s lead engineer and major supporting character, eventually becoming a central character She is incredibly intelligent and inquisitive She s incredibly good at her job and is a valuable asset aboard the Fuseli. The strip is presented as a four panel black and white comedic comic strip, the final panel being the punch Despite the humorous edge, Starslip is a consistently compelling story with many interesting twists and turns.Starslip ran for seven years and has recently finished its run The entire series is available now as physical copies that can be purchased from Kris webstore, or the entire run can be read on his site The strip evolved a lot over the years and quickly became one of the greatest stories I ve ever read I can highly, highly recommend the series

I first read this several years ago as a webcomic, and I think it works even better in print kind of ironic for a sci fi strip, eh Ongoing storylines in comic strips just flow better in print than on a website where you constantly have to click next Even so, this first volume has it s slower parts that threatened my interest at times Straub s sense of humor and the premise of the strip kept me going, and I m looking forward to getting into Vol II.
